~For a Good Cause~

On Wednesday November 7th a ship called the Cosco Busan struck San Francisco's Bay bridge,
breaching the hall and spilling over 58,000 gallons of oil into the Bay. The coastguards original
estimation for the spill had been much smaller, only around 150 gallons, resulting in a slow
reaction to this disaster. The results have been devastating on the beaches and wildlife, and living
in the Bay area I've seen it first hand. The news reports the beach's have been cleaned, but you
don't have to walk far to see this is simply not the case. I only have to look out a window to see oil
splattered sea gulls, and the beachs for miles are a tragic scene of oil and death. The company
responsible for the spill has hired a clean up agency called the O'Briens group, unfortionatly a slow
working company that has hindered volunteer efforts to clean the spill to increase there profits.
Finally a group of "trained" volunteers has been allowed to help out, although hundreds were
turned away from the "training" session which was held. (Of course many "gorilla" effort cleanups
have taken place regardless)
The Result of this spill, and refusal of volunteers has been truly devastating to the wildlife, over
1.500 dead birds have been recovered, and 500 more had to be euthanized.
The Oiled Wildlife Care Network has been a tremendous help to the birds and other oiled wildlife
of the Bay area, collecting and caring for over 1,000 birds and other wildlife. Although the Cosco
Busan is responsible for funding the clean up efforts, this is a wonderful group doing a great job
out there. Through out my pages I've selected several items for which a donation will be made to
The Oiled Wildlife Care Network. If you would like to make a direct donation, or find out more
ways to help please check out the Networks web site at

I will continue adding charity items through out my next several listings, just look for this symbol:

This will be the last month for this cause. I will be posting the total donation raised,
along with a new charity in April. Thank you so much to all who contributed!
